The demise of the Indianapolis Colts...
nAfter watching the Colts grow a big soft one against the Steelers today, I've determined that Peyton Manning will never win an NFL championship.
Now yes, we can certainly blame Mike Vanderjagt for missing a 46-yarder with 20 seconds left (aside: is that the worst miss that you've ever seen? he was a good 20 yards wide right...it looked like something you might catch in a high school game). But the one thing that separates Peyton from those other quarterbacks who have success in the playoffs (see Tom Brady and even to a MUCH lesser extent Ben Roethlisberger) is that he wants it too badly. Now, I know that every NFL quarterback wants to win a title more than anything else, but nobody in the NFL lets that desire be more apparent than Manning. He lets it consume him in every fathomable way. And he lets it affect his play.
The only time when Peyton played well today was when they were down, seemingly with no chance of coming back. And you want to know why? Because Manning is a pussy. There were several occasions where it looked like he was either going to piss down his leg and/or cry (which I think he did cry during the game). I don't know if it's because he's a momma's boy or what but what a freeking wimp.
If I'm an NFL coach, I want a quarterback that is cool, calm, collected (see Brady, Roethlisberger), not somebody who puts up 350 yards and 4 TDs when it doesn't matter.
I guess why I'm being so hard on Peyton is because (while in the end Vanderjagt lost it) on 2nd and 2 and 3rd and 2, Manning throws 20+ yard passes, rather than picking up the first down. This is caused by Peyton's desire to win it himself, rather than give his team the best chance to win. He didn't want Vanderjagt to kick a FG, he wanted to throw a TD pass. I would guess this is caused by some sort of inferiority complex that Peyton developed long ago. Everytime I here him talk, I feel confident that he wasn't one of the cool kids in school. Yeah, he was the star quarterback, but his overall "tool-ness" outweighed the prestige of his position. So it's understandable why Peyton has such a complex (something like "C'mon I'm the star quarterback, everyone should like me", yet no one ever does because he's such a tool).
Sadly for Peyton, it looks like this complex will haunt him throughout his career.
(Aside: I'm also disappointed in the Colts because I would've loved for a Steelers' loss to be blamed solely on Jerome Bettis's fumble on first and goal. He's such a fat ass. Did you notice that Bettis didn't jump up after that run and dance around like an idiot? I did. Because it was his only rush of the game where he didn't jump up like he was still a pro bowler.)
